Umbwe Route
Overview
The Umbwe Route kilimanjaro is the steepest and most direct trail to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching the mountain from the south. It is known for its dramatic scenery, rapid ascent and adventurous trekking experience, making it best suited for experienced climbers and strong hikers.
The route begins at Umbwe Gate and climbs quickly through dense rainforest before reaching high-altitude ridges and the southern circuit of Kilimanjaro. Because of its fast elevation gain, Umbwe is considered a challenging route and requires good fitness and previous trekking experience.
Although demanding, Umbwe offers spectacular views, quiet trails and a true wilderness feel in the early stages. The route joins the Machame trail at Barranco Camp and continues via Barafu Camp for the summit attempt at Uhuru Peak, followed by descent via the Mweka Route.
