Usambara Mountain Hike

The Usambaras are a mountain range located in the northeastern side of Tanzania, in the Lushoto District of the Tanga Region. The Usambara Mountain ranges reach an altitude of 2,290 m high and they make up the  Eastern Arc ranges. It would take you approximately 75 minutes to get to Lushot town from the Usambara Mountains. The distance between MOSHI town and the Usambara Mountains is 222 Km by road

4 Days Usambara Mountain Itinerary

Day 1 + -

Start your hike at 8:30am, departing Lushoto town and going to the royal village Kwembago where the first king of the Sambaa tribe lived. Then head to Magamba tropical rainforest. Here you will visit a German trench cave as well as have the opportunity to see black and white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, birds, many colourful butterflies and Jacksons chameleons. You will enjoy lunch at Magamba viewpoint and then hike to Lukozi where you will overnight at Migombani guesthouse.

Day 2 + -

Following breakfast you will start out at 9am, heading through farms where you can see coffee and banana plantations and experience local village life. You will have great views of the rolling hills of Lushoto and have a go at making and taste-test sugarcane juice. You will hike to Rangwi sister’s convent to have dinner and overnight. This is an old German missionary.

Day 3 + -

Start the day hiking through the beautiful Shagayu rainforest. Here you will be able to see the famous Usambara violet flower which was discovered in 1884 by Saint Paul. You can visit the womens pottery society to witness them making clay pots, followed by a visit to a traditional medicine man. At 6:30pm you will arrive at Mtae viewpoint to watch the sunset (altitude of 1900m). You will have dinner and overnight at Mtae Lutheran mission.

Day 4 + -

Catch an early morning bus from Mtae to Kwesimu village. You will hike from here to Irente farm (approx.. 1 hour). Enjoy a breakfast of fresh produce here before heading to Irente viewpoint where you have wonderful views across the sisal plantations and cliff tops. From here you will head back to Lushoto town, marking the end of the tour.
