Overview

The Machame Route, often known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It is well known for its excellent acclimatization profile, giving climbers good opportunities to “walk high, sleep low,” which greatly increases summit success rates.

The route begins on the southwestern side of the mountain and ascends through dense rainforest before reaching the Shira Plateau, where it joins the Lemosho and Shira routes towards the summit. Along the way, trekkers pass through five distinct climate zones, experiencing dramatic changes in landscape from lush forest to moorland, alpine desert, and the icy summit environment.

Machame offers some of the most beautiful scenery on Kilimanjaro, including views of the expansive Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, the Great Barranco Wall, and the Southern Icefields near the summit. The climb is slightly more adventurous than some other routes, but it remains safe and well-supported, with our professional guides assisting climbers at every stage.

Although some climbers are concerned about the Barranco Wall, it is not a technical climb and is safely managed with guidance from our experienced mountain team. From years of leading treks on Kilimanjaro, we find Machame to be an excellent choice for travellers looking for a balance of challenge, breathtaking scenery, and a strong chance of reaching Uhuru Peak successfully.

This route is known for its excellent “walk high, sleep low” profile, which supports better acclimatization throughout the trek.

Unlike more direct routes, Machame offers diverse and dramatic scenery each day. Trekkers pass through five climatic zones, from dense forest and heather moorland to the volcanic landscapes around Lava Tower and the iconic Barranco Wall. The trail then continues along the southern circuit toward Barafu Camp for the summit attempt at Uhuru Peak. After reaching the summit, climbers descend via the Mweka Route, completing a varied and rewarding journey across different
