Marangu Route Kilimanjaro
Marangu Route Kilimanjaro – Map, Difficulty & Itinerary Guide
Introduction
The Marangu Route Kilimanjaro, often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” is one of the oldest and most well-known routes used to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the only route on the mountain that offers hut accommodation instead of camping, making it a popular choice for climbers who prefer sleeping in mountain huts.
Starting on the southeastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro at Marangu Gate, the route follows a steady trail through rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert before reaching the summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
Marangu Route Overview
The Marangu Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the eastern side and is known for its direct and gradual path to the summit. The trek begins at Marangu Gate and follows a well-established trail through several climate zones.
Unlike other routes, climbers stay in mountain huts at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo camps, which offer basic accommodation along the route. The path ascends steadily toward the summit before descending along the same trail.
Although the route is shorter than some other Kilimanjaro routes, proper acclimatization is still essential for reaching the summit successfully.

Why Choose the Marangu Route?
The Marangu Route remains one of the most popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
Reasons climbers choose this route include:
• Comfortable hut accommodation instead of tents
• A well-established and straightforward trail
• Gradual ascent profile suitable for beginners
• Scenic views of Kilimanjaro’s eastern slopes
• Easier logistics compared to camping routes
Landscape and Scenery
Trekkers on the Marangu Route experience several ecological zones of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The climb begins in dense rainforest filled with giant trees and wildlife. As the trail climbs higher, the landscape changes to open moorland with views of Kilimanjaro’s slopes.
Higher up, the terrain becomes rocky and volcanic near Kibo Hut before reaching the glacier zone near the summit.
Difficulty
The Marangu Route is considered moderate in difficulty. The trail is less steep than some routes, but the altitude still makes the climb physically demanding.
Because the route ascends and descends on the same path, acclimatization opportunities are more limited than on routes like Machame or Lemosho.
Summit Success Rate
Summit success rates on the Marangu Route depend on the itinerary length.
Typical success rates:
• 5 Days Marangu Route: around 60–65%
• 6 Days Marangu Route: around 70–75%
The 6-day itinerary is recommended because it allows better acclimatization.
Park Regulations and Permits
The Marangu route is one of the popular trails located inside Kilimanjaro National Park and require official park permits issued by the Tanzania National Parks Authority. The park authority manages trekking activities, protects the mountain’s environment, and ensures that climbers follow conservation regulations during their ascent. For official information about park rules, conservation policies, and visitor guidelines, you can visit the Kilimanjaro National Park website.

Starting Point and Route Experience
The Marangu Route begins at Marangu Gate, located about 1 hour from Moshi town.
The first day of trekking leads through dense rainforest to Mandara Hut. From there the trail continues to Horombo Hut, where climbers often spend an additional acclimatization day.
Trekkers then ascend to Kibo Hut, located in the alpine desert zone, before attempting the summit at Uhuru Peak during the night.
After reaching the summit, climbers descend back to Horombo and then return to Marangu Gate
Marangu Route vs Other Kilimanjaro Routes
Compared with other routes:
• Marangu vs Machame: Marangu is easier but less scenic.
• Marangu vs Lemosho: offers better acclimatization and more varied scenery.
• Marangu vs Rongai: Rongai is quieter but also less busy.
Marangu is best suited for climbers who prefer hut accommodation and a direct route to the summit.
Marangu Route Itinerary Options
The Marangu Route is usually completed in two itineraries:
• 5 Days Marangu – faster climb with limited acclimatization
• 6 Days Marangu – recommended for better altitude adjustment
Each itinerary follows the same trail but allows different acclimatization schedules.
