Rongai Route 5 Days itinerary

Overview
The 5 Days Rongai Route Kilimanjaro is one of the most accessible and quieter ways to climb Africa’s highest mountain. Approaching from the northern side near the Kenyan border, this route offers a gentler ascent with fewer crowds, making it ideal for trekkers seeking a more peaceful and remote Kilimanjaro experience.
Starting near the northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Rongai Route takes you through a variety of landscapes from forest and moorland to alpine desert and finally the arctic summit zone at Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The route is known for its dry conditions and gradual incline, which makes it a good option during the rainy season compared to southern routes.
This itinerary is also available as a group departure, making it a great option for solo travelers or those looking to reduce costs while sharing the experience. You can join one of our scheduled climbs here:
Kilimanjaro Group Joining Tours
This itinerary follows the scenic Rongai Route Kilimanjaro, one of the quietest trekking routes on the mountain. Unlike other routes, Rongai approaches the summit from the north and descends via the Marangu Route, allowing climbers to experience two different sides of the mountain.
Along the way, you will experience some of Kilimanjaro’s unique highlights:
- Northern slopes of Kilimanjaro
- Remote wilderness and fewer crowds
- Alpine desert landscapes
- Mawenzi Peak views
- Kibo summit approach
This 5-day itinerary is the fastest option on the Rongai Route and is best suited for fit climbers with limited time. For better acclimatization and a higher summit success rate, the route can also be completed over 6 or 7 days Rongai Route, which provide a more gradual ascent.

Preparation & Route Experience
We always recommend spending at least one night in Moshi before starting your trek. This allows time to rest, prepare, and meet your guide for a full briefing. Your equipment will be checked, rental gear arranged if needed, and you’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions before the climb begins.
Favoured by climbers looking for a quieter ascent, the Rongai Route offers a different perspective of Mount Kilimanjaro. The northern side is drier and less forested, providing clear views and a more remote trekking experience. Wildlife sightings are also possible in the early stages of the trek.
Although the route is shorter, the 5-day itinerary requires a steady pace and good physical fitness. Following the “pole pole” (slowly, slowly) approach is essential to help your body adjust to altitude and improve your chances of reaching the summit.
